Author Description <b>Giorgio Monicelli</b> (Tradate, May 21, 1910 – Milan, November 2, 1968) was an Italian translator and editor, stepbrother of the movie director <a href="https://www.goodreads.com/author/show/1935109.Mario_Monicelli" title="Mario Monicelli" rel="nofollow noopener">Mario Monicelli</a>.<br /><br />Son of the playwright <a href="https://www.goodreads.com/author/show/7821657.Tomaso_Monicelli" title="Tomaso Monicelli" rel="nofollow noopener">Tomaso Monicelli</a> and nephew of <a href="https://www.goodreads.com/author/show/6878872.Arnaldo_Mondadori" title="Arnaldo Mondadori" rel="nofollow noopener">Arnaldo Mondadori</a>, the most famous and important Italian editor along with <a href="https://www.goodreads.com/author/show/7224209.Giangiacomo_Feltrinelli" title="Giangiacomo Feltrinelli" rel="nofollow noopener">Giangiacomo Feltrinelli</a>, he was the founder of Urania in 1952, a fondamental series of sci-fi books. He also invented the word "<i>fantascienza</i>" (italian word equivalent for "science fiction" in english language) and the responsable of the spreading of the genre in Italy. He worked for Urania till 1961, when he left for disagreements with Mondadori and was replace by <a href="https://www.goodreads.com/author/show/37715.Carlo_Fruttero" title="Carlo Fruttero" rel="nofollow noopener">Carlo Fruttero</a>, who started an infamous period for Urania series due his censorship and arbitrary editing.<br /><br />He also translated book of different genres, as some of his friends <a href="https://www.goodreads.com/author/show/1455.Ernest_Hemingway" title="Ernest Hemingway" rel="nofollow noopener">Ernest Hemingway</a>, <a href="https://www.goodreads.com/author/show/17439.Malcolm_Lowry" title="Malcolm Lowry" rel="nofollow noopener">Malcolm Lowry</a>, <a href="https://www.goodreads.com/author/show/596071.Robert_Lowry" title="Robert Lowry" rel="nofollow noopener">Robert Lowry</a> and many others.<br /><br />He died in 1968 for hepatic cirrhosis.
